Information Skills

Students are taught Information Skills in Library lessons, as well as listening to stories by different authors.

The Information Skills are important because of the amount of information available nowadays- students need to know how to find relevant information, to select what will be useful, and to organise and present that information. They need to know how to find information from a variety of sources, both in printed material and by using technology, and how to use that information successfully.

Information skills in the school-  This site gives an explanation of the 6 steps in the Information Process, which are taught to students in Library lessons.

Library lessons focus upon specific Information Skills, based upon class topics. The students can then use these skills in whatever topic is presented to them. Skills in the use of ICT for research are also included in the lessons.

The aim of these lessons is:

  • to provide opportunities for students to develop Information Skills and use them competently and confidently

  • to develop Information Skills at the appropriate level for each student

  • to ensure that the students become ‘information literate,' so that they can take responsibility for their own learning

  • to develop skills so that students become lifelong learners
